BSI certifies the first control box for smart metering systems (Swistec Germany)

Control boxes are central components in smart grids whose operation depends on high interoperability and cyber security. The BSI has now certified a control box for the first time according to the Technical Guidelines (TR).

By 2032 all German households will have digital electricity meters and some will also have smart meters that send and receive data. A smart meter gateway (SMGW) transmits electricity data to grid operators, for example. Control boxes connect to SMGWs allowing efficient control of electricity data and power feed-in to avoid grid overloads.

The certified “SwiSBox” control box from Swistec GmbH meets the requirements of TR BSI-TR-03109-5 and ensures the secure transmission of control commands in the smart grid. Other applications such as controlling heat pumps or PV systems are possible by using certified control boxes. The BSI also supports manufacturers with a new test platform for testing the suitability of their products during development.

The grid operators in Ghana face some challenges. As there is little industry, the consumption peak is in the evening – as in many African countries – and generates a large part of the energy costs. Adding solar plants does not solve this problem, but aggravates problems with grid quality (frequency fluctuations, voltage spikes and dips).

In early December, two Swistec employees, Werner Frei and Fabian Ulmer, spent two weeks analysing the situation on site. The aim is to launch a pilot project in cooperation with local stakeholders, the SECO and the climate investment funds (CIF) to evaluate the usefulness of a load management system by shifting the load peak and locally regulating the grid quality. To this end, we engaged with local grid operators and various authorities, presented our project and obtained feedback, which was positive throughout. We benefited from the experience and contacts of Werner Frei, who has been active in Ghana for many years. So we can now count on a team of local, trained staff who will support us in the implementation.

We are excited and are looking forward to a successful project!

Our ripple control systems work reliably and efficiently. For the evaluation of this efficiency, the RKS transmits all stored alarms, events and measurement values to the connected PC. The ripple control transmitter also generates a comprehensive operating protocol, but this is usually only consulted when a fault occurs in the system. It can be very useful, however, to know a little more about how the system as a whole is working.

With the option “Transmitter interface” the RKS command unit is connected to the suitable ripple control transmitters SRS or SFU-K via a serial interface. In this way an exchange of important data between transmitter and command unit takes place, which brings some essential advantages for the operator:

Transmission of all transmitter operating data to the central control unit.

In case of a transmitter alarm or transmitter warning, the message text of the transmitter is displayed, which enables a faster and more accurate fault analysis already at the first sighting of the alarm entries at the command unit.

Transmitter data (e.g. currents and voltages) are recorded with each transmission and displayed in a monthly graph for analysis.

The time in the transmitters is synchronized with the time in the control center. This eliminates tiresome readjustments at the transmitter and the half-yearly changeovers between summer and winter time.

The screenshot below shows an example of a recording of the transmitter currents. In most cases only a connection cable is needed for the connection between the controller and the ripple control transmitter, so it can be realised with little effort.

If you would like to retrofit your command system with the option transmitter interface please contact your local contact point.
