BSI certifies the first control box for smart metering systems (Swistec Germany)
Control boxes are central components in smart grids whose operation depends on high interoperability and cyber security. The BSI has now certified a control box for the first time according to the Technical Guidelines (TR).
By 2032 all German households will have digital electricity meters and some will also have smart meters that send and receive data. A smart meter gateway (SMGW) transmits electricity data to grid operators, for example. Control boxes connect to SMGWs allowing efficient control of electricity data and power feed-in to avoid grid overloads.
The certified “SwiSBox” control box from Swistec GmbH meets the requirements of TR BSI-TR-03109-5 and ensures the secure transmission of control commands in the smart grid. Other applications such as controlling heat pumps or PV systems are possible by using certified control boxes. The BSI also supports manufacturers with a new test platform for testing the suitability of their products during development.
